ART DEPARTMENT WAYFINDING
This is a wayfinding system for the Indiana State University Art and Design Department. The following designs result from user experience testing done with the department's staff, faculty, and students. The focus is to promote a system that would ease traffic congestion, decrease disruptions or late arrivals, help students switch classes, and be valuable in emergencies.
FLAWS IN CURRENT SYSTEM
A survey was sent to all the art department faculty, staff, and students via email; flyers were posted in each art building. The purpose of the survey was to conduct user testing with people interacting with the current wayfinding system of the art buildings.
ART ANNEX
The Art Annex sits on the opposite side of campus away from Fine Arts and Fairbanks. Inside the building, the rooms are not clearly marked; students commented about not knowing which classroom is which. In the designs following, a mural would be painted on the exterior of the building, and signage hung from the ceiling would mark the physical room the user was in and where they could go to find other areas.
FAIRBANKS
In the survey, people noted that they felt turned around in the building and did not even realize what was in the basement. Following along with the other buildings, a vinyl sign would be placed over the main entrance to the building. When first walking through the doors the user would see a stand sign telling them what each floor has. Throughout the building, there are additional wayfinding signage so the user always knows where to go.
FINE ARTS
Fine Arts has a newer and older side to it. The rooms on the older side are always overlooked and students walk around the entire building looking for 202. This would be addressed simply by placing a sign outside the door that immediately draws attention with additional signage in the hallways leading students in different directions depending on their needs.
THE FINAL PROPOSAL
IMPROVING MY SKILLS
This extensive project facilitated the use of many programs and resources. I expanded my skill levels in each program, especially Photoshop. This was also my first exchange with designing a wayfinding system.
